How to Take Care of Your Shoes so That They Will Keep Looking Brand New

Accidentally stained your favourite pair or Christy Ng shoes? We've got you covered with a list of easy tips to help increase the longevity of your favourite pair!

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SHOES?

Your favourite pair of Christy Ng shoes doesn't require much attention and care - they are built to last and serve you well, with very little / minimal maintenance in mind. However, we have tips to help you maintain your shoes in good conditions and prolong their lifespan.

SAY NO TO MOISTURE

Store your shoes in dry places well away from moisture. Moisture is bad because it promotes bacterial growth and causes the material of your shoes to disintegrate easily when you finally wear them after some time.

Use silica pouches or gels to keep them moisture-free. In case you don’t have silica gel, you can stuff your shoes with newspapers and change them after a week or so, thereby protecting your beloved soles from moisture. The newspaper stuffing will help to absorb the excess moisture in your shoes. Remember that keeping them dry is always the key.

KEEP THEM AWAY FROM DUST

Frequently rotate your shoes. Also, store your shoes in a proper shoe closet and make sure you clean and polish them on a regular basis. Good upkeep of your shoes will ensure the natural color of the shoe remains and this prevents your favourite pair from looking old or worn out. Keep them in a normal room temperature away from dust.

SHOE TREE IS VERY IMPORTANT

Maintain the natural shape and texture of your shoes by using a shoe tree.
A shoe tree holds your shoe in its proper shape so it dries out correctly, and keeps the leather from cracking by wicking away moisture. The absorbent wood also helps to dry out the lining of shoes, preventing the shoes from disintegrating inside out.

AWAY FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT

Avoid storage of footwear under direct sunlight or extreme heat. This is critical because heat will dry out the glue layer between the shoe lining and upper, causing them to crack and peel. Never leave your shoes in the car boot for prolonged periods of time. The car boot is very hot and the heat and moisture trapped inside the boot will damage the glue and other components inside your shoe. Always keep your shoes at cool room temperature away from moisture.

DON’T USE PLASTIC SHOEBOXES

Airflow is critical for your shoes, so never store them in plastic shoe boxes that are airtight. Opt to store your shoes in breathable dust bags or just in a clean and dry shoe closet with good air circulation. A good air circulation helps to reduce moisture content of your shoe closet.

USE POLISH AND SHINER

Polish and renew your shoes so they stay as shiny and fresh as the first day you bought them. If you accidentally stained your favourite pair, you can opt to use Zippo lighter fluid to remove the stain. Zippo is a good solvent that helps to dissolve and remove most stains very quickly. It is always advisable to test the liquid on an inconspicuous area of the shoe before applying it. It can be purchased at any convenience or hardware store. Do be careful as it is a flammable liquid.

KEEP THE SHOE SOLE CLEAN

Clean soles are the foundation of great shoes.

    • Tap your shoes together outside to remove any loose dust on the outsole.
    • Use a brush to remove more stubborn dirt from the soles.

REJUVENATE THE LEATHER

Leather breathes and you can help your leather shoes breathe better by rejuvenating them with a shoe cream. However, apply the shoe cream on dry shoes using a brush or soft cloth and let the cream does it's work by leaving your shoes overnight before wearing them. It will help to moisturize the leather and prolong the lifespan of your shoes.

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE AND BAKING SODA TO MAKE YOUR SHOES BRIGHT AGAIN

Everyone enjoys flaunting a pair of shiny bright sneakers but what many don’t know is that even your old shoes can be as bright as a new pair. Just use a toothbrush dipped in a paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda and gently scrub the paste all over the shoe and see the magic paste work wonders. You’ll have a bright clean pair of sneakers that looks as good as new.
